FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cape Town, South Africa – Hotlane Organisation, a community-based non-profit organisation dedicated to ocean conservation, environmental sustainability, and youth empowerment, has been recognised within UNESCO's Ocean Literacy ecosystem, marking an important milestone for grassroots environmental leadership emerging from South Africa's township communities.

Founded by Khotso Mogotlane, Hotlane Organisation has spent years working to bridge the gap between communities and the ocean through clean-up initiatives, environmental education, youth engagement programmes, and innovative approaches to sustainability.

This recognition affirms the importance of ensuring that ocean literacy is accessible to everyone, particularly communities that have historically been excluded from conversations and opportunities relating to the ocean economy and marine stewardship.

A Seat at the Global Table

"For us, this recognition is not simply about being listed. It is about acknowledging that township communities have valuable knowledge, perspectives, and solutions to contribute to global conversations about our oceans," said Khotso Mogotlane, Founder and Executive Director of Hotlane Organisation.

"Young people from communities such as Khayelitsha deserve opportunities to learn about, connect with, and ultimately help shape the future of our oceans. Ocean literacy should belong to all of us."

Global Framework & Partnerships

The UNESCO-IOC Ocean Literacy Program

The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) leads international efforts to enhance ocean literacy and foster a deeper understanding of the ocean’s importance to life on Earth. Through the Ocean Literacy Program, UNESCO-IOC promotes educational initiatives, public engagement, and policy advocacy aimed at restoring and preserving marine ecosystems. The Blue Thread initiative is one of many projects under this umbrella, designed to drive the principles of ocean literacy forward in alignment with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

Synergy with the SEA BEYOND Initiative

This international milestone also aligns the goals of regional grassroots initiatives with sweeping global frameworks like SEA BEYOND—a project by Prada Group conducted in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC) since 2019. SEA BEYOND focuses on raising awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation, contributing to the progress of ocean education on a global scale through a series of training initiatives tailored for younger generations.

Cultivating the Next Generation

Through initiatives such as community clean-ups, environmental awareness campaigns, educational programmes, and youth development activities, Hotlane Organisation seeks to cultivate a generation of environmental leaders who understand the interconnected relationship between people, nature, and sustainable development.

The recognition comes at a time when global collaboration is increasingly needed to address pressing environmental challenges, including marine pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. It also highlights the growing contribution of African grassroots organisations in advancing the objectives of ocean sustainability and environmental justice.

Hotlane Organisation believes that meaningful ocean action begins within communities and that empowering local voices is essential to achieving lasting impact.
